If you happen to carry a used 17 inch front tire around with you to set your fuel tank on when you remove it from your bike, then you do not need this part. But if you don't carry around a spare front tire, this bump guard is a great way to prevent disaster.

The fuel pump outlet elbow on the bottom of the 660 tank is made from plastic, and is the first thing to contact the ground when the fuel tank is removed. This bump guard installs over that vulnerable elbow so you do not risk breaking the fuel pump outlet and are spared from needing to replace a $500 plus fuel pump assembly (since the elbow is not sold separately by Aprilia).
